A clinical health psychologist is someone who has received specific and extensive training in the connection between the mental and physical aspects of well-being. This includes interdisciplinary training with medical providers to work together in treating medical conditions that may impact mental health. Health psychologists are usually trained first as general psychologists (well versed in depression or anxiety), but they can also provide specialty treatment in coping with pain, illness, sleep problems, etc.
Logistically, training entails: 5-6 years of graduate school/PhD, 1 year of internship training, 1 year of health-focused postdoctoral fellowship, multiple years in practice before board certification.
